SLOVENIA:

Marjan Cencen said that the transition to a parliamentary democracy and market economy is calling also for thorough legislative reform of the environmental protection laws in new democracies. The competitiveness of the Slovenian economy will be protected by the ban on the import of polluting technologies to Slovenia. This year the Slovenian Parliament has passed an Environmental Protection Act and cooperation of NGOs is being sought in the implementation of Agenda 21. Slovenia needs international financial assistance in the environmental field for business and environmental investments or restructuring; steering the economy in an environmentally-sound direction; and transferring of appropriate technology and management practices. Within the UN, efforts have to be made for the appropriate division of labor with regard to environmental issues. The document that would result from these efforts could be submitted to the CSD for comment and to ECOSOC for approval.
