ICELAND:
Amb. Tómas Á. Tómasson reminded delegates that the
success of the CSD will not only depend upon the CSD itself but the
active work of each and every country in implementing the results
of UNCED. Innovative financing should become a central strategic
theme of the upcoming CSD working group meeting on finance. Other
issues of importance are the growing emphasis on the development
and transfer of environmentally sound technologies, improving the
link between technology transfer and capacity building, and
increased South-South cooperation for improving the adaptation of
imported technologies and enhancing the use and development of
indigenous, local and traditional knowledge. Addressing the
interface of trade, environment and development is yet another
issue of international significance. Fruitful international
environmental collaboration also requires solid regional and
institutional support. The Nordics also support the work of the
Conference on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks, the
Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island
Developing States, the national and regional implementation of the
Forest Principles, the INCD and Habitat II. He noted that last May
the UNEP Governing Council accepted the offer of the US to host in
the fall of 1995 an Intergovernmental Conference on the Protection
of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities. Iceland has
offered to host the final preparatory meeting for this conference
in the spring of 1995. Finally, the Nordics feel that the effect of
military activities on the environment has not received sufficient
attention and underline the importance of getting an overview of
activities in this field.
