UNESCO:

Mehir Ashraf of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said that successful follow-up to UNCED depends on national action. UNESCO has given priority action to activities concerned with the implementation of the relevant chapters of Agenda 21 and is reorienting existing programmes. Four inter-sectoral initiatives have been launched by UNESCO on sustainable development, biological diversity, capacity building, and environment and development information. As part of UNCED follow-up, the IACSD has assigned UNESCO the role of "task manager" for ensuring coordination within the UN on two chapters of Agenda 21: science and education. UNESCO has established focal points with NGOs and other organizations for facilitating contacts and exchange of information in the implementation of the "environmental education" elements of Agenda 21.
