MEXICO:

The representative from Mexico said that the environment should not be given sectoral treatment but should be viewed in light of developing planning. The CSD should be a place for political dialogue. The intersessional working groups should help solve the problems of technology transfer and financial resources and identify solutions involving the GEF and the Bretton Woods institutions. Mexico welcomes the progress made so far in the INCD and noted that this Convention is important to Latin America as many countries in the region suffer from desertification. She stressed the need to focus on the global nature of desertification. Mexico also supports the Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States and the Conference on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks.
