TANZANIA:

Frederick E. Mallya supported the view that the CSD should take a leading role in addressing issues related to poverty alleviation, unsustainable production and consumption patterns and lifestyles, and debt in relation to sustainable development. He welcomed the decisions by governments to host intersessional meetings that are expected to contribute to the work of the CSD and hopes that developing countries will be assisted so they can participate in these meetings. Tanzania is satisfied with the progress achieved so far in the negotiations for the desertification Convention, hopes that the Convention and an instrument for Africa will be finalized by June 1994, and urges the Second Committee to adopt the draft decision submitted by the INCD. Tanzania supports the adoption of a procedural resolution that will convene two further sessions of the Conference on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in 1994. He also supports the AOSIS proposal for a one-week resumed session of the PrepCom for the Conference on the Sustainable Development on Small Island Developing States. Tanzania is preparing for Habitat II and expects to implement the recommendations of the Global Strategy for Shelter to the Year 2000. Finally, Tanzania believes that Habitat and UNEP have two distinct mandates which justifies that appointment of the Executive Director of Habitat without further delay.
