HUNGARY:

Andr s Lakatos said that the UN must develop more efficient cooperation and coordination among various organs and programmes and realize the goals accepted by UNCED. Progress since Rio has been limited and more has to be done to translate the Conference's commitments toward the developing countries and countries with economies in transition into action, particularly regarding the provision of new and additional financial resources to implement Agenda 21. The implementation of Agenda 21 in Hungary is dependent on the socioeconomic problems of the country, the transition to a market economy, and accumulated environmental problems. The actual implementation of objectives set by UNCED depends to a large extent on national initiatives and readiness to incorporate the principles of sustainable development in national programmes.
