CANADA:
Amb. John Fraser stressed the need for an integrated
approach to combating desertification. The affected countries have the
responsibility of assuming the leadership role in their own action plans,
while the donor countries are there to provide financial and technical
support. The Canadian International Development Agency will commit $4
million for urgent assistance to Africa as well as an additional $100
million for anti- desertification programmes in Africa over the next five
years.
