Amb. Robert Van Lierop agreed with India on the interrelationship between global benefits and local environmental impacts. Like Australia, he said that this is a political process and that we should look for political definitions of terms such as global benefits. For small island developing states, the CSD actually is an environmental security council. He said that the North did not need to lower its standard of living but its standard of waste.
