INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON HEALTH, THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:

This workshop was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 23-25 February 1994. Participants recommended that the CSD: promote awareness and commitment to the close and fundamental relationship between health, the environment and sustainable development; convince governments of the need for political commitment to integrate these three issues; encourage a carefully planned redirection of national and international resources towards health and the environment; encourage relevant actors to participate in the sustainable planning process; and ensure at the national and local levels that major groups are given better opportunities to be involved in decisions and action to protect and promote health. The participants also suggested the means towards achieving these recommendations, including: institutional capacity building; collaboration between UN agencies, international bodies and NGOs; formulation of policies and programmes in multilateral and bilateral cooperation agencies; the promotion of research; and the use of economic instruments and information dissemination.
