Under-Secretary-General Nitin Desai responded to some of the comments made during the High-Level Segment. He said to keep sustainable development on the international agenda, the Rio agenda must be linked with other emerging issues, such as unemployment. In Rio, the Heads of State focused on these issues, but now not many governments are monitoring follow up. He urged the ministers to go back to their Heads of State and tell them what the CSD is doing. Regarding the timing of elections, he said that the Secretariat will examine the possibilities and constraints and take it to the Bureau. The Secretariat will also work to ensure greater transparency and NGO participation, distribute simplified reporting guidelines, and develop indicators.
