THINGS TO LOOK FOR TODAY

THE BUREAU: Dr. Sai will convene the first meeting of the PrepCom Bureau at 9:00 am this morning, despite the fact that three positions have yet to be filled (two from Latin America/Caribbean and one from Eastern Europe). One item of discussion may be the organization of work for the remainder of the session. Dr. Sai may designate issue coordinators from the Bureau to conduct informal sessions around the six thematic areas plus possible groups to deal specifically with the issues of women and human rights. Another possible option would be to hold informal consultations of the whole where all the issues would be discussed.

PLENARY: Morning and afternoon sessions of the Plenary will continue in Conference Room 2 putatively scheduled to begin at 10:00 am. The tentative speaker's list for this morning's session will possibly include the Economic Commission for Africa, New Zealand, Austria, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, the Sudan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy, and the Center for Development and Population Activities. Speakers for the afternoon may include the World Health Organization, UNICEF, Mali, Nicaragua, Nepal, the Russian Federation and the National Wildlife Federation.

INDEPENDENT UNFPA EVALUATION BRIEFING: There will be an open briefing at 6:00 pm in Conference Room 5 to present an advanced copy of the executive summary of an independent evaluation of UNFPA. The final report of the evaluation, due out in several weeks, was financed by Canada, Finland and Germany and undertaken by consultants from the three donor countries. There is a strong possibility that this report will be critical of UNFPA's strategic approach to dealing with population problems, given their limited resources, and will call for more accountability at the Fund.

NGO ACTIVITIES: The Women's Caucus will meet at 9:00 am in Conference Room C. Three regional NGO meetings are scheduled: Latin American/Caribbean NGOs at 12:30 pm in Conference Room D; North American & European NGOs on the 8th floor of the Church Center at 4:00 pm; and the African NGOs in Conference Room D at 5:00 pm. The NGO Briefing/Panel Session on "Gender, Equity & Empowerment of Women" will begin at 6:30 pm in Conference Room 2.
