THINGS TO LOOK FOR TODAY

PLENARY: This morning's speakers list includes: Italy, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Tonga, Hungary, Slovenia, Fiji, Panama, Mali, Bangladesh, Paraguay, Cuba, the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Secretary-General of the Fourth Conference on Women. The afternoon speakers are expected to be: Federated States of Micronesia, Egypt, Bolivia, Thailand, Sweden, Holy See, Benin, Burkina Faso, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Palestine, United Nations University, Economic Commission for Africa, Food and Agriculture Organization, the Chair of the Commission on Sustainable Development, Committee on the Rights of the Child, Working Group on Indigenous Populations, Organization of African Unity, Population Action International, Population Council and the Center for Development and Population Activities.

MAIN COMMITTEE: The Main Committee is expected to begin with consideration of the Chair's compromise text for paragraph 8.25. If consensus cannot be reached on this text in approximately 20 minutes, the discussion will be tabled until later in the week. Otherwise, the Committee is expected to keep to the schedule agreed to on Monday: Chapters 9 (Population distribution, urbanization and internal migration) and 10 (International migration) in the morning and Chapters 11 (Population, development and education), 13 (National action), 14 (International cooperation) and 16 (Follow-up to the Conference) in the afternoon.

The Chair's proposal for paragraph 7.1 will probably not be addressed until Thursday. Look for a revised draft text of Chapter I (Preamble) to be circulated by the Chair during the course of the day. Also look for an announcement about another meeting of the Friends of the Chair to discuss Chapter II (Principles).
