FUTURE WORK OF THE CONFERENCE:

The Conference Chair, Satya Nandan, proposed and the Conference adopted a decision recommending to the General Assembly that two more sessions of the Conference be scheduled for 1994. Nandan was informed by the UN Secretariat that it would be possible to hold one session from 14 to 31 March and a second one from 15 to 26 August, pending approval by the General Assembly. This may prove to be a problem since Tunisia and several other countries have noted that the March session conflicts with other meetings. Particularly troublesome for the African countries would be the conflict with the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) for the elaboration of an international convention to combat desertification in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, scheduled in Geneva from 21 to 31 March. In addition, while Nandan has indicated that he would like to hold simultaneous meetings during the spring session, observers have noted that the financial implications and the limited availability of conference services during the spring session make this highly unlikely.
