THINGS TO LOOK FOR TODAY AT THE CONFERENCE

INFORMAL PLENARY: Discussions should continue throughout the day as governments move section by section through the Chair's negotiating draft. Work will begin on paragraph 5, the Precautionary Approach. Look for specific comments on mechanisms for international cooperation, regional fisheries management organizations or arrangements, duties of the flag States and compliance and enforcement by flag States.

IN THE CORRIDORS: Look for talk in the corridors on Sweden's new Conference Room Paper. This paper includes elements for a possible draft instrument on Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks Compatible with Sustainable Development. Notable elements of this draft text include: regional cooperation on fisheries; the CSD as the proper forum for follow-up to Agenda 21 provisions on marine living resources; and convening every four years of a Conference of Fisheries Ministers to prepare for regular CSD reviews.

NGO ACTIVITIES: NGOs will have an information- sharing session each morning at 9:00 am in Conference Room E. The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) and Greenpeace International will host a press briefing in Conference Room E at 2:15 pm.
