FAO ACTIVITIES:

Work continues on the FAO International Code of Conduct on Responsible Fishing. Consultations with NGOs took place during the final week of the March session but, because the States delegations were under severe workloads during the session, little formal consultation was possible. Consolidation of the whole draft will continue through 1994. The final draft is expected in December and will then be presented to the FAO's Committee on Fisheries in March 1995.

The Code will contain eight sections but two sections are seen as crucial to its formulation: Fishing Operations, and, Fisheries Management Practice. Look for a Technical Consultation on all aspects of the proposed Code. Look also for further details on the FAO Expert Consultation to be hosted by Canada June 6-12, 1994, on Fishing Operations. Watch out for IMO and ILO comments in July on the outcome of the Expert Consultation.
