COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY:

Measures recently undertaken by the EC regarding the protection of biodiversity include: the adoption of a "Habitats" Directive, which establishes a common framework for biodiversity conservation; the development of a Geographical Information System to monitor the state of biodiversity and of natural zones; and the adoption of a set of "severe" procedures for a preventive approach to biosafety. The Community currently devotes almost 20% of its environmental budget to biodiversity-related projects.
