ROUNDTABLE ON INNOVATIVE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

The German Foundation for International Development hosted a roundtable in Berlin from 21-24 June 1994 to review the scope for innovative resource management in the context of social development. The discussions dealt with four key issues: mobilizing private initiative; improving efficiency and effectiveness of social development spending; identifying innovative sources of financing for social development; and optimizing the use of national and external assistance resources. Throughout the meeting the consensus was that the most outstanding resource of any society is its people. The Roundtable urged the Social Summit to acknowledge the role of women as key agents of economic and social development and to call for the removal of all legal and other barriers to their full economic participation. Participants also discussed the need for systems of accountability and transparency that will reduce government corruption and debt relief.
