EXPERT MEETING ON POVERTY

The WSSD Secretariat, the World Bank and The Netherlands co-sponsored the Expert Meeting on Poverty, which was held from 27-29 June 1994 in Lusaka, Zambia. Over 30 international experts examined the effectiveness of poverty reduction strategies: how to enhance the contributions of women and minority groups to economic development; the social consequences of structural adjustment; and the role of NGOs and local communities in the struggle against poverty. The report of the meeting is being tabled as PrepCom document A/CONF.166/PC/17.

This meeting was the third in a series of expert meetings. The Expert Meeting on Social Integration was held in The Hague, The Netherlands in September 1993 and the Expert Meeting on Productive Employment was held in October 1993 in Saltsjobaden, Sweden.
