INTRODUCTION

The introduction outlines the need for and goals of the Social Summit. It acknowledges that societies must respond more effectively to the "material and spiritual needs of individuals, their families and communities." It also highlights the relationship between social development and social justice on one hand, and peace and security among nations, on the other. The introduction also recognizes the importance of democracy and transparent and accountable governance for the realization of social and people-centered sustainable development. The only brackets are around the reference to living "in harmony with the environment."
