The 28th meeting of UN-Water is taking place at IFAD headquarters in Rome, Italy

UN-Water On Thursday afternoon, 1 February 2018, UN-Water Chair Gilbert Houngbo welcomed participants to the open session of the 28th UN-Water meeting and noted that, with water becoming increasingly precious, UN-Water plays a stronger role than ever in addressing the world’s challenges.

Juwang Zhu, UN-Water Interim Secretary, provided an overview of preparations for the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which will review progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 (clean water and sanitation) as one of the sub-set of Goals for special review. He highlighted the importance of the preparation for the HLPF review, including through the UN-Water-led development of the SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018, which will provide a baseline assessment for the SDG 6 indicators.

William Reidhead, UN-Water Global Monitoring Officer, updated the meeting on activities in 2017 related to SDG 6 monitoring, including the preparation of the SDG 6 Synthesis Report. He highlighted that work in 2017 sought to generate a critical mass of baseline data, as well as to initiate monitoring and capacity building activities. Reidhead noted that indicator-specific reports would be launched during World Water Week 2018 in August, in Stockholm, Sweden, after the launch of the SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018, at HLPF in July 2018.

At the conclusion of the first day of the two-day meeting, Australia launched a report titled, “Good Practice Guidelines for Water Data Management Policy,” which was developed as an initiative of the High Level Panel on Water - World Water Data Initiative.
