Worldwatch World Summit Policy Briefs. Leading up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Worldwatch Institute is releasing a series of World Summit Policy Briefs, focusing on key issues at the WSSD. Each brief will highlight a critical topic or theme for the Summit, building on the recommendations and priorities outlined in the World Summit edition of State of the World 2002.

Heinrich Böll Foundation World Summit Papers. The World Summit Papers are contain a diversity of background information, studies, essays, documentation etc. related to issues of the World Summit. The series is published in various languages.

 WSSD Briefing Papers. Published by IIED in collaboration with the Regional and International Networking Group (RING), these 16 papers cover topics ranging from gender and globalization to climate change.
 

The business case for sustainable development: Making a difference toward the Johannesburg Summit 2002 and beyond, September 2001.  The first in a series of three WBCSD reports for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in September 2002, this document restates the business case for sustainable development. It is a forward-looking statement that identifies building blocks toward a sustainable society. It is intended to help shape the thinking of all who will take part in the summit.

ANPED Action Pack, September 2001
ANPED has prepared an Action Pack for organisations in the UNECE region wanting to get involved in preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

UNED Forum's Rio Conventions Briefing Paper, September 2001

This paper presents a review of the current status of the six Multi-lateral Environmental Agreements that have emerged since Rio '92, covering issues including: Biological Diversity and Bio-safety, Climate Change, Desertification, Persistent Organic Pollutants, Prior Informed Consent, Law of the Seas & Fish Stocks.

  UNED (August 2001) has produced 2 new documents to assist the National Review process of Agenda 21 implementation. Presented in an easy to use check-list format, these documents allow governments and stakeholders to assess progress in meeting the commitments from Agenda 21 as well as a number of other related Summit processes.
--- National Reporting Template identifies time-specific targets of these processes.

--- Education Commitments looks at agreements from Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 and later CSD sessions.

The International Local Government Preparatory Process for the UN WSSD in 2002, January 2001

The Local Government Preparatory Process will include: an international survey and report on Local Agenda 21 (LA21) conducted jointly with the UN Secretariat for the CSD in cooperation with Capacity 21/UNDP; regional consultations with local government leaders and technical experts; an International Local Government Preparatory Committee (Prepcom); an official local government position paper for RIO+10; a case studies report; and a well-prepared Local Government Delegation to participate in the RIO+10 process, Prepcoms and World Summit.

Women and Sustainable Development 2000 - 2002, February 2000.
Recommendations in Agenda 21 and Related Documents and Suggestions for a Review of Implementation. This paper was prepared by the CSD NGO Women's Caucus for Discussion at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development Intersessional Working Group, 22 Feb - 3 March and Its 8^th Session, 24 April - 5 May 2000.

UNDP's Capacity for Development: New Solutions to Old Problems, Mar 2002. UNDP launched this publication at the International Conference on Financing for Development in Monterrey, Mexico.

UNU Report on International Environmental Governance: The Question of Reform: Key Issues and Proposals, Mar 2002. The report outlines some key issues that have dominated the debate on IEG reform in the lead-up to Johannesburg, including the prospect of establishing a centralized governance system that could be based around a new World Environment Organization. Another key question addressed is whether a World Environment Court could serve as a useful complement to existing governance structures.

Multi-stakeholder Processes - Beyond Conflict and Deadlock, Jan 2002

Financing for Sustainable Development, Jan 2002.
This new RING/IIED report states that discussions surrounding both the WSSD and the FFD process indicate an absence of creative thinking on the issue of financing, and on the challenges of globalisation. It argues that there is a crisis of legitimacy confronting the agencies and actors involved in development processes and presents some ideas and approaches which could usefully be acted upon in preparation for the two Summits.

State of the World 2002, Jan 2002.
The Worldwatch Institute has released the 19th edition of the Institute's annual review of the health of the planet and its people. This edition is dedicated to the WSSD and also features a foreword by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan about the importance of using the WSSD to accelerate a transition to sustainable development.

Yearbook of International Co-operation on Environment and Development, 2001/2002 edition

The Yearbook is an encyclopedia containing updated systematic descriptions of the world's most important international agreements on environment and sustainable development. This volume includes e.g. the new Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants concerning the elimination of twelve highly toxic chemicals, as well as updated material on other conventions, covering air pollution, climate change, biological diversity, marine environment and hazardous substances. Furthermore, the activities and structure of more than 50 INTERGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS and NGOs dealing with environmental issues are described in the same systematic way. COUNTRY PROFILES with summaries of the performance and main commitments of all OECD countries and 10 major countries outside the OECD area are also included.

The Yearbook is an especially suitable tool for individuals and organizations working broadly with international environmental issues - for instance officers of national and international agencies; national public officials involved in environment and development policy-making; scholars and students of international environmental politics and law; company and industry executives (especially those dealing with environmental impact assessment, ISO 14000 standards, or long-term business strategies); NGO secretariat staff; and journalists/information officers.
