Participants at WUF7 gave a standing ovation when youth volunteers sang at the closing ceremony
On Friday, participants convened in parallel sessions involving: two dialogues in the morning; and three roundtables, on Youth, Indigenous Peoples and Gender and Women, as well as a special session on “Cities for Equity: The Challenges for Territorial Policy in Colombia” in the afternoon. These were followed by a plenary session and a closing ceremony.

Participants in the Raising Standards of Urban Resilience dialogue discussed the key components of resilience, including the ability of a population, city and system to respond and adapt to shocks and stresses, from climate change to violence.

In A Safe City as a Just and Equitable City dialogue, speakers debated strategies to improve urban safety and security. Two Ugandan youth delegates shared the challenges girls face in cities and urban slums, and Colombian hip-hop artists performed improvised rap songs about making safer cities for all.

In the Gender and Women roundtable, participants discussed the linkages between gender equality, women’s empowerment and urbanization. While noting progress toward gender equality worldwide, participants highlighted the “physical and psychological intimidation” women often still face, especially when striving for positions of power.

The Indigenous Peoples roundtable considered historic and current challenges facing indigenous peoples, including discrimination and lack of access to basic goods and services. Participants called for addressing indigenous peoples’ concerns within UN-Habitat’s Global Housing Strategy and the Habitat III agenda.

In the closing ceremony, awards were presented to the winners of the 2013 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor Awards and the 2013-2014 World Habitat Awards. Several videos, including one featuring a vision of youth for equitable, sustainable cities, were interspersed with keynote addresses from the Mayor of Medellín, the Governor of Antioquia, the Minister of Housing, City and Territory of Colombia and the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. WUF7 closed at 7:30pm.
