First Extraordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region
(the Abidjan Convention)

The first extraordinary meeting of the contracting parties to the Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African region (Abidjan Convention) convened on Tuesday, 10 June 2008, in the Sandton International Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa. Delegates heard opening statements from the Executive Director of UNEP and South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, and received a report on the revitalization process of the Abidjan Convention. The meeting adopted seven decisions on the revitalization of the Abidjan Convention, including a decision to change the name to include reference to Southern Africa.
