Eighth African Union Summit
22-30 January 2007, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
ARC Vol. 7 No. 1; 7 February 2007: The eighth African Union (AU) Summit took place at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 22-30 January 2007. The Summit included sessions of: the Permanent Representatives Committee, from 22-23 January; the Executive Council, from 25-26 January; and the AU Assembly, from 29-30 January. The main themes of the Summit were “Science, Technology and Scientific Research for Development” and “Climate Change in Africa.” IISD RS coverage.

Sixth Ordinary Session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW-6)

ARC Vol. 4 No. 6; 4 June 2007: The sixth Ordinary Session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW-6) took place from 30-31 May 2007, at the Palais du Parlement, in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. Attended by ministers and government representatives, together with issue experts from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the meeting focused on strengthening regional and international cooperation and solidarity to address the African water and sanitation crisis and to make progress on achieving the water-related targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the World Summit on Sustainable Development. First High-level Biofuels Seminar in Africa
30 July - 1 August 2007, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
ARC Vol. 9 No. 1; 4 August 2007: The first High-level Biofuels Seminar in Africa was held at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 30 July - 1 August 2007. The seminar, held under the theme of “Sustainable Biofuels Development in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges,” was jointly organized by the African Union Commission, the Government of Brazil and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. It brought together some 250 participants representing AU member states, African regional economic communities, UN agencies, the scientific community, the private sector and non-government organizations. Anglophone Africa Subregional Workshop on the Review of and Capacity-Building for the Implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas under the Convention on Biological Diversity
13-16 August 2007, Cape Town, South Africa
ARC Vol. 5 No. 2; 19 August 2007: The Anglophone Africa Subregional Workshop on the Review of and Capacity Building for the Implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (the Workshop), under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), convened from 13-16 August 2007, in Cape Town, South Africa. One in a series initiated in response to the request of the eighth meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP-8), the Workshop sought to review and strengthen capacity for the implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA), and was attended by 75 participants, including government representatives from 20 countries, representatives of five non-governmental organizations and nine indigenous community representatives. ARC Vol. 10 No. 2; 30 October 2007: The fifth meeting of the African Committee on Sustainable Development (ACSD-5), which included the African Regional Implementation Meeting for the sixteenth Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16), took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 22-25 October 2007. Organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the meeting convened under the theme “Transforming African Agriculture and Rural Economy for Sustainable Development.” IISD RS coverage.
Joint Conferences of the Contracting Parties (COP) of the Abidjan Convention for the Cooperation in the Protection of the Marine and Coastal Environment in the West and Central Africa Region and the Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Eastern African Region
Briefing Note Vol. 11 No. 1; 16 November 2007: The Joint Conferences of the Contracting Parties (COP) of the Abidjan Convention for the Cooperation in the Protection of the Marine and Coastal Environment in the West and Central Africa Region and the Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Eastern African Region took place on 7 November 2007 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The session marked the eighth session of the Abidjan Convention and the fifth session of the Nairobi Convention. The Joint COPs were followed by a meeting of the Joint Heads of Delegation of the Abidjan and Nairobi Conventions and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) on 8 November.
