Working together to realize societies in harmony with nature: Mechanisms and tools to support on-the-ground initiatives
Biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in landscapes and seascapes are central to achieving the broad goals of the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity. The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) fosters collaboration among governments, Indigenous communities, businesses, and other stakeholders. This event showcased examples of on-the-ground multi-stakeholder collaboration to help realize the vision of living in harmony with nature.
Cooperation Day
Highlighting the role of cooperation with different processes, conventions, and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) for the efficient and effective implementation of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) goals and targets, Cooperation Day provided a space for stakeholders to gather and showcase their cooperation initiatives that were presented and shared throughout the different thematic days of the COP 16.
Monitoring Biodiversity within the Territories of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities
Monitoring is essential for effective biodiversity conservation—and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) emphasizes the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLC) in this monitoring. This event featured the perspectives of Indigenous rights’ advocates, entrepreneurs, academics, and conservation practitioners on community-based monitoring for biodiversity conservation.
High-Level Segment Reception: Accelerating Biodiversity Action
Throughout COP 16, many events and official statements focused on the importance of accelerating action on implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). On the eve of the last day of COP 16, ministers and leaders from various sectors came together during a high-level reception to hear how the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership (AP) is helping to implement action and to learn about new commitments from countries.
COMDEKS Phase 4 and the Satoyama Initiative: Societies in harmony with nature
The Community Development and Knowledge Management for the Satoyama Initiative (COMDEKS) is a flagship programme of the Satoyama Initiative, which supports conservation and sustainable management of socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes. During this session, panelists shared examples of successful projects in Turkey, Cambodia, and Colombia. Rissa Edoo, UN Development Programme (UNDP), moderated the event.
Ministerial Lunch: Engaging Agrifood Sectors in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
The food and agriculture (agrifood) sector plays an important role in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) as biodiversity is the cornerstone of agriculture. Integrating the agrifood sector into National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) is a crucial step for countries to promote biodiversity conservation, food security, and nutrition.
High-Level Thematic Ministerial Dialogue “Peace with Nature”
The “war on nature” manifests through deforestation, pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change, driven by industrialization, overconsumption, and unsustainable resource extraction. This high-level thematic ministerial dialogue discussed how sustainable development can only be achieved through peace among people, peace between people and nature, and respect for human rights.
High-Level Thematic Ministerial Dialogue “Synergies Between Biodiversity and Climate Change: From science to action”
Biodiversity loss and climate change are deeply connected. As temperatures rise, so does the risk of species extinction. Strategies that consider both climate and biodiversity have produced the best results, but these are often still treated as separate issues. This High-Level Thematic Ministerial Dialogue aimed to encourage better coordination between the two topics, to achieve the global objectives set out in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

This High-Level Thematic Ministerial Dialogue brought together Ministers of Finance and Environment and other high-level representatives to address critical challenges related to financing biodiversity. Discussions included the need for: international financial system reform; increased and direct funding from all sources; redirecting financial flows; identifying and reducing harmful subsidies; and innovative financial mechanisms.
