UN75 and Beyond: Inclusive Multilateralism and Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) as a Tool
This virtual meeting will, on the occasion of the UN’s 75th anniversary on 24 October, provide space for a dialogue among urban leaders and UN officials to explore the innovative options the urban world offers to deliver on inclusive multilateralism towards 2030, with a focus on VLRs as an innovative tool.
16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF)
The meeting discussed the impacts of COVID-19 on various aspects of mining, including employment, community resilience, gender equality, artisanal and small-scale mining, climate action, resource taxation, and technological innovation.
IUFRO-GFEP Virtual Launch of the Global Assessment Report on “Forests, Trees and the Eradication of Poverty: Potential and Limitations”
This event, timed to coincide with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, launched a scientific assessment report and an associated policy brief addressing the relationship between forests, trees, and poverty, as well as the roles of forests and trees in poverty reduction.
Reactions of Local and Regional Governments to UN75 Report
This event discussed the findings of the Visioning Report UN 75: the Role of Local and Regional Governments in the Future Global Governance of the International System and how best to take them forward at the local, regional and global levels
Forum of Mayors 2020
The Forum of Mayors 2020, the first of its kind, brought together mayors and city leaders from around the world to share best practices and develop a shared vision for sustainable urban development. This need was amplified by the COVID-19 crisis, which revealed urban challenges, including the lack of green spaces, the lack of affordable and healthy housing, air pollution, and inadequate public transport systems.
Biodiversity Summit
The Summit focused on the theme “Urgent Action on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development,” to highlight the urgency of action at the highest levels in support of a post-2020 GBF that contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and places the global community on a path towards realizing the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity, “Living in harmony with nature.”
33rd UN-Water Meeting
The 33rd UN-Water Meeting offered a brief chance for the Members, Partners, and observers of this UN interagency coordination mechanism to discuss the role of water and sanitation in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and to receive updates on upcoming opportunities to engage at the global level to build momentum for implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation.
Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond
Together with the UN Secretary-General, the Prime Ministers of Canada and Jamaica convened to facilitate discussions with national leaders, international organizations and other stakeholders on developing financing solutions that will support countries in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigate its negative impacts on development initiatives worldwide, particularly in relation to progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Nature for Life: Global Ambition Day
The third day of the UN Development Programme’s Nature for Life events convened global leaders and stakeholders in a “whole-of-society approach,” showcasing their commitment to urgent and transformational actions to promote a nature-based planetary safety net in response to planetary emergencies. It included sessions on the “what,” the “why” and the “how” of constructing a nature-based safety net.
