17th Session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) to the UNCCD
CRIC 17 represented the first opportunity to assess countries’ progress in implementing the UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework. This first set of progress reports, while still lacking in detail, provided countries with a useful moment of reflection on the effort needed to ensure robust monitoring of the Convention’s five Strategic Objectives and fully comply with their reporting obligations based on the new four-year review cycle.
55th Meeting of the GEF Council
The GEF Council adopted the first Work Program since the approval of the seventh replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-7). The Work Program comprised 18 projects in 25 recipient countries, and amounted to USD 157.8 million. In addition, the Council of the LDCF/SCCF adopted a Work Program comprising six project concepts, with resources amounting to USD 45.85 million.
10th Meeting of the High Level Assembly (HLA) of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC)
The HLA also provided the opportunity to share views on how to increase climate ambition, taking into account the co-benefits for clean air, endorse the CCAC Talanoa Statement and Joint Statement, and launch the CCAC Action Programme to Address the 1.5°C Challenge.
3rd Meeting of the Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MOS3)
During the meeting, Signatories agreed to list eight species of sharks in Annex 1 of the MOU, a provision regarding lookalike species, a procedure for modifying Annex 1 of the MOU, addressing the listing criteria, terms of reference for the intersessional working group on conservation measures, and more.
COP24 Act!on Agriculture
Using real-world examples from developed and developing countries, the event highlighted specific opportunities, proven best practices and realistic possibilities for increasing agricultural productivity, mitigating agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and strengthening agricultural resilience in cost-effective ways
Oceans Action Day at COP 24
The key outcome of the day was a greater commitment to include oceans on the UNFCCC agenda and the climate change negotiations, with many high-level delegates underscoring the importance of concurrently addressing threats to the ocean and the impacts of climate change.
