6th Session of the IPBES Plenary and Stakeholder Day

Delegates celebrated the meeting as a major milestone in the history of IPBES, noting the approval of four regional assessments on biodiversity and ecosystem services—plus a thematic assessment on land degradation and restoration—will enhance the Platform’s impact and assist policy makers around the word in developing actions to protect biodiversity and conserve or enhance nature’s contributions to people.

47th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-47)

During IPCC-47, the Panel adopted decisions related to extending the mandate of the Ad Hoc Task Group on Financial Stability, which will report back to IPCC-48; establishing a task group on gender; the terms of reference of a task group on the organization of the future work of the IPCC in light of the global stocktake under the Paris Agreement; expanding the IPCC Scholarship Programme to include funding for chapter scientists, and more.

Cities & Climate Change Science Conference (2018 CitiesIPCC Conference)

Participants met in plenary and parallel sessions organized around four themes: cities and climate change (imperatives for action); urban emissions, impacts and vulnerabilities (science and practice of cities); solutions for the transition to low carbon and climate resilient cities (science and practice for cities); and enabling transformative climate action in cities (advancing science and advancing cities).

1st Part of the 24th Session of the International Seabed Authority

Even before arriving in Kingston, very few participants doubted that the draft regulations for deep-seabed mining would dominate discussions, given their role in unlocking the flow of monetary benefits into the ISA. Equally, quite a few Member States and stakeholders saw this meeting as an opportunity to ensure that the “regs” put in place the necessary environmental safeguards for a risky activity in the least known global ecosystem: the deep sea.
