OEWG5: FRIDAY, 7 APRIL

The fifth session of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention ended on Friday afternoon at 4:22 pm after delegates agreed to end their work in the contact group on financing issues. The final outstanding draft decision on budget issues will be forwarded to the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP8), which will convene in late 2006, with brackets remaining around text that was not agreed at OEWG5. However, most other issues were resolved, and about 20 draft decisions were approved for consideration at COP8.

During the closing plenary, Kenya reminded delegates that COP8 will be held in Nairobi, while OEWG5 Co-Chair Anne Daniel of Canada thanked all of those involved in the OEWG for their hard work, noting the "smooth" way the session operated.
