VENUE AND DATE OF THE SECOND MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES
Note by the Interim Secretariat
1. Rule 3 of the draft rules of procedure for meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity provides that "the meetings of the Conference of the Parties shall take place at the seat of the Secretariat, unless the Conference of the Parties decides otherwise or other appropriate arrangements are made by the Secretariat in consultation with the Parties ". Rule 4, paragraph 2, of the same document (UNEP/CBD/COP/1/2) states that "at each ordinary meeting, the Conference of the Parties shall decide on the date and duration of the next ordinary meeting".
2. Accordingly, the Conference of the Parties, at its first meeting, may wish to decide on the venue and date of its second meeting.
3. To assist the Conference of the Parties in the consideration of this item and in order to avoid conflict in scheduling with any other intergovernmental meeting, the Interim Secretariat consulted the provisional calendar of intergovernmental meetings for 1995 and requested the views of the United Nations Conference Services on the possible timing of the second meeting of the Conference of the Parties. They had no objection to the meeting being scheduled in the fourth quarter of 1995.
4. The Conference of the Parties may wish to consider the dates of 27 November to 8 December 1995 for the convening of its second meeting.
