The eighth session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA or Treaty) is expected to adopt a package of measures to enhance the functioning of the Multilateral System of access and benefit-sharing (MLS), which will result in revising the scope of the MLS and the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) used for exchanges of MLS material.
The session will also address items on general policy and implementation of the Treaty and the MLS; and administrative and budgetary matters. Among other issues, the Governing Body will consider:
- the Funding Strategy;
- farmers’ rights;
- sustainable use;
- the Global Information System;
- digital sequence information;
- cooperation with international organizations; and
- the report of the Compliance Committee.
The session will also celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Treaty’s entry into force.
The meeting will be held from 11-16 November 2019. A special event will take place on 9 November, to celebrate the progress and achievements of the Treaty since its entry into force in June 2004, and explore new ideas for its future direction.
