Friday, 11 November 2011

On Friday morning, Working Group I completed the consideration of a draft recommendation on sustainable use, focusing on bushmeat; and Working Group II discussed a draft recommendation on Arctic biodiversity.

Plenary resumed in the morning to address a draft recommendation on the indicators for the new Strategic Plan. Discussions were concluded in the afternoon, when plenary also considered compromise text on the draft capacity-building strategy for the Global Taxonomy Initiative. During the closing plenary, SBSTTA delegates adopted eight recommendations. Chair Barudanovic gaveled the meeting to a close at 6:24 pm.

Thursday, 10 November 2011

On Thursday morning, SBSTTA 15 plenary took up draft recommendations on ecosystem restoration and SBSTTA effectiveness; and a Friends of the Chair group met to discuss the capacity-building strategy for the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI). In the afternoon, Working Group I considered draft recommendations on invasive alien species (IAS) and sustainable use and Working Group II discussed a draft recommendation on inland water biodiversity. Plenary resumed in the evening.

On Wednesday morning, Working Group I discussed sustainable use, including options for small-scale food and income alternatives in tropical and sub-tropical countries, revised recommendations of the Liaison Group on Bushmeat, and on improving sustainable use in a landscape perspective. Working Group II focused on Arctic biodiversity. In the morning, plenary discussed ways and means to improve SBSTTA effectiveness and took up a draft recommendation on the capacity-building strategy for the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) in the afternoon.

A Friends of the Chair group on ecosystem restoration, co-chaired by Horst Korn (Germany) and Krishna Chandra Paudel (Nepal), met at lunchtime. A Friends of the Chair group on invasive alien species, chaired by Hesiquio Benitez (Mexico), and the contact group on indicators met in the evening.

On Tuesday morning, SBSTTA 15 plenary continued consideration of indicators related to the new Strategic Plan and addressed ways and means to support ecosystem restoration. In the afternoon, Working Group I discussed ways and means to address gaps in international standards on invasive alien species introduced as pets, aquarium and terrarium species, as live bait and live food. Working Group II focused on the implications on changes in the water cycle and freshwater resources in the implementation of the work programme on inland water biodiversity. A contact group on indicators, co-chaired by Tone Solhaug (Norway) and Larissa Maria Lima Costa (Brazil), met in the evening.

Monday, 7 November 2011

The fifteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened today in Montreal, Canada. In the morning, plenary heard opening statements and a keynote presentation by Jo Mulongoy before his retirement. Then plenary tackled the draft capacity-building strategy for the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI). In the afternoon, plenary discussed the updated technical rationale and indicators of the new Strategic Plan. Delegates also heard a presentation on the “contribution of ecosystem restoration to the objectives of the CBD and a healthy planet for all people.” In the evening, the Secretariat hosted a reception.
