On Monday, 2 May 2016, SBI 1 Chair Jae Choe (Republic of Korea) opened the first meeting of the new Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) under the CBD, emphasizing the SBI’s role in reviewing progress in implementation of the Convention and its protocols, and in identifying obstacles and means of implementation in achieving the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi targets. CBD Executive Secretary Braulio Dias highlighted the historic nature of the first SBI meeting within the CBD process, emphasizing: biodiversity mainstreaming, capacity building, resource mobilization, collaboration with other biodiversity-related conventions, mechanisms to support review of implementation, and national reporting. Elizabeth Mrema (UNEP), on behalf of UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, noted the need to: redouble efforts to achieve crosscutting Aichi targets; focus on the most effective ways in deploying finance; and make data robust to stand scrutiny.

Delegates heard presentations on progress in achieving Aichi targets 11 (protected areas) and 20 (resource mobilization), and discussed: review of progress in the implementation of the Convention and the Strategic Plan; and review of progress towards Aichi target 16 on the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing.
