5th Meeting of the Subsidiary Bodies for Scientific,Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD).

Monday 31 January :

The fifth session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-5) to the convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) begans today and will continues until Friday 04 February 2000. SBSTTA delegates met in two working groups.

Working Group I  considered:

  • alien species
  • marine and coastal biodiversity
  • the programme of work for drylands, Mediterranean, arid, semi-arid, grassland and savannah biodiversity
  • agricultural biodiversity
Working Group II considered:
  • the ecosystem approach
  • development of biodiversity indicators
  • sustainable use of the components of biodiversity

Plenary reviewed:

  • the global taxonomy initiative
  • the pilot phase of the Clearing House Mechanism (CHM);
  • guidelines for the second national reports
  • work programmes on inland waters and forest biodiversity
  • rosters and terms of reference for the ad hoc technical experts groups.

Opening Plenary was at 10:00 a.m. in the ICAO building and addressed the agenda and organization of work.

SBSTTA will report its recommendations to the Fifth Conference of the Parties (COP-5) to be held in Nairobi from 15 - 26 May 2000.
