The Third ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity will hold its fifth and final session online.

The conference is providing the opportunity for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to develop a regional contribution to current negotiations on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework—goals and targets to transform society’s relationship with biodiversity by 2050.

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) convened four sessions of the Third ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity in 2020, which took place virtually on the following topics:

  • ASEAN-ACB Virtual Dialogue on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework on 23 September;
  • Mainstreaming Biodiversity on 27 October;
  • Transformative Change and Innovations in Biodiversity Conservation on 26 November; and
  • Business and Biodiversity on 10 December.

This fifth and final session on 5 July will address the overall theme of the conference: ‘Towards 2050: Living in Harmony with Nature.’

The Co-Chairs of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework will deliver the first keynote address. Senior officials from governments, as well as from regional and multilateral organizations, will also present keynotes, highlighting experiences of global and regional action. ASEAN Member States, regional officials and stakeholders will offer their views in response. Finally, participants will hear messages from ministers and senior officials of ASEAN Member States on their aspirations for biodiversity over the next five years.

This session is being co-organized by ACB and the Government of Malaysia through its Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA). The European Union (EU) and the Governments of Malaysia and Germany are providing financial support for the conference.

This concluding session takes place ahead of the August meeting of the OEWG, which aims to complete preparation of the draft framework document to be finalized and agreed at 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP-15) when it convenes in Kunming, China, in October 2021.

The Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) will provide digital coverage and a summary report of the 3rd ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity. Kindly return to this page on Monday, 5 July 2021, for full coverage of the Conference.

Funding for ENB coverage of this Conference has been provided by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.
