During the opening plenary, delegates heard welcoming addresses from representatives of the Government of Kenya and UNEP. In an initial exchange of views, delegates shared national experiences and challenges in addressing the issue of mercury. Delegates also outlined preferences for a legally-binding approach, voluntary measures, or a combination of both.
During the afternoon plenary, the Secretariat introduced the intersessional work and updated delegates on the work of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership Programme. Delegates also heard a presentation on the progress report on the review of global atmospheric emissions (UNEP (DTIE)/Hg/OEWG.2/INF/1).
