The fourteenth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC-14) opened on Tuesday, 11 September 2018 in Rome, Italy.CRC Chair Noluzuko “Zukie” Gwayi encouraged new members of the Committee and observers to engage in a constructive manner to contribute to the core work of the Rotterdam Convention.On their first day, thanks to productive intersessional work, delegates made substantial progress in addressing the agenda, beginning by considering the draft decision guidance documents (DGDs) for:

  • the pesticide acetochlor;
  • the flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD); and
  • the pesticide phorate.

With little further discussion, the Committee swiftly requested the Secretariat to prepare three draft decisions to be forwarded to COP-9.The Committee then considered an additional notification for final regulatory action for HBCD, establishing a contact group to prepare a rationale for this notification. The contact group will meet later in the week.

IISD Reporting Services, through its Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) Meeting Coverage, provided daily web updates from CRC-14 and published a summary and analysis of the meeting.
