On Thursday morning, the CITES Standing Committee addressed: personal and household effects; registration of captive-breeding operations of Appendix-I animal species for commercial purposes, focusing on Cacatua in the Philippines; great apes; bushmeat; Tibetan antelopes; and rhinos, with many expressing concern on incrased poaching levels and urging awareness-raising at the highest level. The Committee then heard a report from the Chairs of CITES Scientific Committees, including on allegations of conflict of interest of a committee member.
In the afternoon, the Committee engaged in the Review of Significant Trade (RST), including consideration of recommendations from the Scientific Committees; recommendations to suspend trade issued more than two years ago; and the African grey parrot in Cameroon. On the latter, the SC endorsed a quota of 3000 parrots per year to re-launch the trade in Cameroon, following submission of a management plan and population survey. The SC also swiftly considered: climate change; reporting on trade in artificially propagated plants; and criteria for the inclusion of species on Appendices I and II. On cooperation with the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the SC established a working group chaired by Mexico.
