UNCCD COP 9

On Saturday morning, AWG-LCA 9 convened an informal plenary to exchange views on the Chair's draft conclusions on organization and methods of work in 2010. Discussions focused, inter alia, on whether to mandate the Chair to develop a new draft negotiating text for the AWG-LCA's next meeting in June and whether to base it on the AWG-LCA's report to COP 15 or reflect work done in Copenhagen more broadly. In the afternoon, the Chair circulated revised draft conclusions and the informal plenary reconvened to exchange views on them.

On Saturday morning, the AWG-KP 11 convened in a contact group chaired by Chair Ashe to discuss agenda, modalities of work, documentation and technical input. Based on this initial exchange of views, Chair Ashe circulated his draft conclusions and parties held informal consultations on the text in the afternoon.

During an informal plenary in the morning, AWG-LCA Chair Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe (Zimbabwe) introduced her draft conclusions.
Adrian Macey, New Zealand, said the AWG-LCA Chair's draft negotiating text should include the core elements of work undertaken at COP 15.
Alf Wills, South Africa, for the African Group, requested clarify on the method of work for a single contact group in terms of sequencing and providing equal priorty for BAP elements.
During the AWG-LCA informal plenary in the evening, China suggested basing negotiations on the AWG-LCA's report to COP 15 and work undertaken by parties based on the report.
India called for working on the basis of the AWG-LCA's report to COP 15.
Jimena Leiva-Roesch, Guatemala, expressed an openness to consider innovative working methods that are based on inclusiveness.
Luis Machado, Brazil, commented on the Chair's revised draft conclusions during the AWG-LCA's evening plenary.
AWG-LCA Chair Mukahanana-Sangarwe called for clear conclusions on the Chair's flexibility to prepare negotiating texts and guide the process.
Claudia Salerno Caldera (Venezuela) stressing the need to respect the mandate given to the AWG-LCA by COP 15.
During the informal plenary, Mohammad Al Sabban, Saudi Arabia, proposed that the AWG-LCA should continue its work using the same working methods before.
