ANPED - Sustainable Product Campaign - Pilot Project

Summary

The Sustainable Product Campaign aims to increase environmental awareness of consumers and to enable change towards sustainable consumption and production. It will stimulate the shift in consumer attitudes by providing them with life cycle analysis of a n umber of selected everyday products. The scientifically based arguments will be summarized in leaflets, and other campaign materials. In order to enable change in purchase decisions consumers will be provided with information on other environmentally soun d product options and lifestyles. The stories of products will also provide a starting point for organizing a dialogue among different stakeholders (representatives of consumer, environmental, women's and other citizens' organizations, with representative s of producers and governmental agencies). At the workshops organized during the campaign a balanced group of participants will identify measures to enable change in consumer behaviour and to green the economy ( e.g. ecological tax and subsidy reform, in creased producer responsibility...) Mutual understanding created during the campaign workshops should lead to the creation of a national network or an alliance for promoting sustainable consumption.

The campaign should result in the recognition of the campaign workshop participants and the broader public that sustainable products need more than just technological fixes; it requires a joint effort of all social sectors to adapt our values, institutio ns, legislation and infrastructures to achieve sustainable consumption and production.

An evaluation workshop at the end of the project will assess the results of Sustainable product Campaign in the pilot countries and formulate recommendations for the extension to other European countries and improvements.

The scientific and international coordination will be carried out from Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Energy and Environment, Germany with support of the secretariat of ANPED WG CAP. The national coordinators of the campaign are: Alternative Consumer As sociation, Netherlands, Women's Environmental Network, UK; AEDENAT, Spain; Mama '86, Ukraine, Green Federation, Krakow, Poland, Waste Reduction Alliance, Hungary.
