General Sustainable Consumption

  • The Norwegian Ministry of Environment WWW server includes a variety of materials related to the issue of sustainable production and consumption.

  • Friends of the Earth International now offers a www site on sustainable consumption and production. The Sustainable Societies site offers repor ts on sustainable consumption, the FoEI position paper on Sustainable Production for the 1995 Session of the CSD, and coming soon, an overview of the FoEI Sustainable Society Programme.
  • The Project for an Alternat ive Future's www site (from 1996 PAF will be re-organized into ProSus - Program for Research and Documentation for a Sustainable Society) contains (in English) two reports "Steps Towards Sustainable Consumption" and "Sustainable Norway." The site also contains links, a list of publications (in Norwegian), and an overview of PAF's work.

  • China--income, consumption and expenditure statistics.
  • The United Nation Environment Programme Work Group on Sustainable Production Development's homepage covers UNEP-WG-SPD's Research Programme, and Network Programme
  • The Network Programme, has developed an International Networkof 350+ experts from some 600 organisations in 46 countries who are working in the area of SPD.
  • The Research Programme "monitors the 'State of the Art of SPD' in a general way and focuses on activities and making an inventory of them. Many environmental subjects that are familiar and help ing to make incremental improvements towards the goal of sustainability fit into RA1.e.g. eco labelling, LCA, standards, design for disassembly, Eco Redesign, etc."

  • The EE-Link, is a gopher and World Wide Web site for environmental education. EE-Links mission is to "spread information and ideas that will help educators explore the environment and investigate current issues with students". This site provides resources both for teachers and for people who support K-12 environmental education.

Industrial Ecology

  • The IndEco consulting organization's WWW page has an overview of their work on industrial ecology, links to other sites, as well as articles on industrial ecology, economic instruments, and indicators.

  • The Cygnus Group is designed to provide individuals and organizations with information regarding the most efficient and effective ways to reduce waste and conserve resources. This site contains back copies of the ULS Report, information on packaging, including a new study on packaging efficiency and other documents pertaining to packaging and waste reduction. This site also provides you with numerous pathways and resources leading to databases on related subjects as well as EPA data on waste prevention.
  • Global Business Network's site has posted an excerpt from Hardin Tibbs book: "Industrial Ecology: An Environmental Agenda for Industry"
  • The Technology, Business and Environment Program at MIT's site contains: A Bibliography on Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development, Abst racts from recent theses in the Technology, Business and Environment Program, an Overview of Ongoing Research, and articles, including, "Defining the Social Agenda: Developing Consensus Towards Durable Goods Recycling, A Report on the MIT March 1993 Durables Recycling Conference" by John R. Ehrenfeld & Jennifer Nash; and a newsletter article on Green Money promotes the awareness of socially and environmentally responsible business, investing and consumer resources. This site's goal is to "educate and empower individuals and businesses to make inform and financial decisions through aligning their corporate and financial principles".
  • The Green Clips site provides a summary of recent articles in the media on sustainable architecture and related government and green business issues. It covers green building strategies an d innovative case studies, new technologies and products, research findings, legislation, and green business issues.

Indicators and Analysis

  • Green Seal is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the environment by promoting the manufacture and sale of environmentally preferable consumer products. It sets environmental standards and allows the use of its certification mark on products found to meet them. Green Seal also educates consumers on how to use their buying decisions to help the environment. This site contains background information on Green Seal, a list of Green Seal's certified products, and brief descriptions of Green Seal standards.

  • A draft version of the ISO 14,000 Standards is available at this URL. ISO 14,000 covers standardization of: environmental management systems, environmental performance evaluations, environmental auditing, life cycle assessment, and environmental labeling.
  • Steve Young at the Centre for Technology and Social Development at the University of Toronto, has a wonderful site covering life-cycle analysis with:

  • Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology provides a homepage on Eco-cycle Program is a newsletter on life-cycle tools, management and product policy.

  • Global Ecolabelli ng Network's (GEN) WWW site provides links to GEN News and Forums, Membership Requirements, List of Members, Other Labelling Programs, and Related Eco-Labelling Organizations and Associations.

  • Eco-Rating International uses "uniquely developed methodology to assess and rate a firm's environmental performance". Eco-Rating provides evaluations for primary production schemes (agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, mining), manufacturing processes, and life cycle analysis of individual products.

Energy, Technology, and Design

  • TDH Associate International'sserver contains information on renewable energy, electric vehicles, aerospace research, conservation products, and links to related links.

  • The US Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network provides a search engine to access DOE information on buildings, transportation, industrial and agricultural processes, municipalities and community systems.

  • The IEA and OECD present the CADDET Energy Efficiency Information Centre for demonstrated energy efficient technologies, operating worldwide via a network of national contacts. Among other things, this site provides a database of over 1700 demonstrated projects in the industrial, building, transportation, and agricultural sectors.
