Vienna Energy Forum 2011
HIGHLIGHTS FOR THURSDAY, 23 JUNE 2011
The Vienna Energy Forum 2011 concluded today in Vienna, Austria. During the day, participants convened in roundtable and plenary sessions focusing on: addressing basic rural electrification needs in a regional context; partnerships for financing; and the way forward.

During the closing plenary, Irene Freudenschuss-Reichl, Director General, Austrian Development Cooperation, Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and Nebojsa Nakicenovic, Deputy Director, IIASA, noted that energy access is about poverty alleviation, and that although targets are important, enabling energy access requires local, national and international actions, such as appropriate policies, sustainable financing instruments, and regional and global cooperation. They said further that climate change issues should not hinder the energy access agenda, highlighting that they are complementary and require integrated actions. Kandeh Yumkella, UNIDO Director-General, noted that the three goals of universal access, energy intensity reduction and a global renewable energy mix, have been given more substance and expanded on by participants, and are now gaining momentum. He highlighted that the energy revolution is launching another industrial revolution, one which will bring individual freedom and access to dignity.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEDNESDAY, 22 JUNE 2011
On Wednesday 22 June, the Forum convened several plenary sessions focusing on different areas of the theme of promoting energy access for all. During the plenary sessions, panelists provided short presentations on relevant issues, including: renewable energy and its potential for energy access; a new global agenda for the 21st century; concrete energy action to address climate change; pathways to sustainable energy systems; the role of energy efficiency for productive uses; low-carbon transformational technologies; and financing for universal energy access. These presentations were followed by discussion sessions in which participants sought clarifications on issues and also provided concrete examples of measures taken to promote energy access.

The Ministerial Meeting on Energy and Green Industry also concluded today.
