El lunes por la mañana, los delegados participaron de una sesión plenaria sobre tendencias en el escenario energético mundial, moderadas por Altino Ventura, Secretario de Energía y Planificación Energética y Desarrollo del Ministerio de Minas y Energía de Brasil. Thomas Stelzer, Subsecretario General para la Coordinación de Políticas y Asuntos Interinstitucionales, del Departamento de Asuntos Económicos y Sociales (DAES) subrayó la importancia de aumentar el acceso a la energía, que apuntala la capacidad de lograr un desarrollo sostenible y los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODMs). Anil Kane, Presidente de la Asociación Mundial de Energía Eólica, dijo que se proyecta que la capacidad instalada de energía eólica alcanzará 160000 MW en los próximos tres años. Angus Friday, Presidente de la Alianza de Pequeños Estados Insulares en Desarrollo, señaló que el cambio climático es un conductor clave de las políticas y acciones hacia la energía renovable.

El lunes por la tarde hubo dos sesiones plenarias, una sobre los vínculos entre el cambio climático, la seguridad energética y las energías renovables, y otra sobre las condiciones de mercado para las energías renovables versus los combustibles fósiles. Las sesiones estuvieron coordinadas por Rodney Smith, de World Business Review, BBC. Stephen Karekezi, Director de la Red Africana de Investigación sobre Políticas Energéticas, dijo que el fundamento para las energías renovables en África es la seguridad y la posibilidad de un nuevo crecimiento en el sector industrial. Katja Lautar, Secretario de Estado de la Oficina de Gobierno para el Crecimiento, de Eslovenia, subrayó la necesidad de limitar el consumo de energía lo antes posible y del modo más efectivo en términos de costos. Jaume Margarit, Director de Energías Renovables del Instituto para el Ahorro de Energía y su Diversificación  (IDAE), de España, hizo hincapié en la necesidad de eficiencia energética. José Domingues Miguez, Ministro de Ciencia y Tecnología de Brasil, destacó la desigualdad de la distribución geográfica per capita de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Nebojsa Nakicenovic, del Instituto Internacional para el Análisis de los Sistemas Aplicados (IIASA) dijo que el debate acerca de la energía debería producirse en términos de energía sostenible versus energía no sostenible.

Anil Kane, President, World Wind Energy Association, said renewable energy is no longer a fringe player.

 
Christine Lins, Secretary General of the European Renewable Energy Council, highlighted the EU 20% renewable energy production target to be achieved by 2020.
 
Angus Friday, Chairman of the Alliance of Small Islands States (AOSIS), said that the culture of consumerism is like a culture of bacteria consuming all the life supporting material available and ultimately killing themselves.

Stephen Karekezi, Director of the African Energy Policy Research Network (AFREPREN), noted the differences on the ethanol crop system in Brazil and in African countries.
