General Information
For Costa Rica is a great honor to be the host country of the Underlying Causes for Deforestation and Forest degradation Workshop.
In Costa Rica, you will enjoy its natural wonders as well as the kindness of the people that has grown up in a country without an army. Costa Rica is an extraordinary wildlife refuge in which, not withstanding the small size of its territory, 5 % of the biodiversity of the planet is present. In just a few hours, you can enjoy the richness of our pacific coast as well as the exuberance of the atlantic coast , visit our national parks , wildlife refuges, forest reserves, biol ogical reserves, an a variety of tropical forests ( Dry forest, Cloud Forest, and Rain Forest within some); as well as the majestic volcanoes and wonderful beaches.
Location and population
Costa Rica locates in Central America, covering an area of 51.100 km2. It has a population of about 3.350.000 habitants.

Economic Activities
Traditionally, Costa Ricas main income has come from agriculture; being coffee, bananas and sugar cane its main products. In the last decades, the country has position itself in international markets with non traditional products suc h as flowers, roots, tubers, fruits and vegetables. Also, the country has developed conditions that have attracted eco tourism, as well as investments for the High-Tec industry.
Climate
Costa Rica has a very pleasant climate. Normally very sunny , with a possibility of rain in the afternoon. In the summer, the Central Valley temperature is normally under 24 °C, with a mild breeze at sunset. In the lowlands and coast lands, temperatures average 30 °C.
Translation
There will be simultaneous english, spanish, french, and russian language translation during the plenary and technical sessions.
Companion inscription
There is no official program for companions during the workshop. Nevertheless, in case there is a well advance notification, special rates for tourist visits and social activities can be obtained for those persons travelling as comp anions..
Airport Tax
An airport tax of $16 or its equivalent value in colones must be cancelled when leaving the country.
Currency exchange
The official currency of Costa Rica is the colon ( ¢ ), and the actual exchange rate is ¢268 colones for US $. The devaluation rate is ¢ 0.15 cents daily.

The Workshop will be hosted at the Melia Corobicí Hotel , located at the western part of the capital city, 20 kilometers from the Juan Santamaría International Airport

Internal transport
There will be Airport-Hotel-Airport transportation. En case a mishap occurs, the normal rate for a trip by taxi from the Airport to the Hotel is $10.
Visas
Those participants that come from the following countries must obtain an authorize visa from Costa Rica for their entry to the country.
