Special Address: Alan Simcock, Executive Secretary, OSPAR
Commission, and Past Co-Chair, UNICPOLOS, Toward
Achieving WSSD Objectives at the Regional Level |
|
Alan
Simcock, Executive Secretary, OSPAR
Commission, and Past CO-Chair, UNICPOLOS,
delivered
a special address on achieving WSSD objectives with a regional
component, which include: encouraging the application by 2010
of the ecosystem approach; promoting integrated coastal and
ocean management; and strengthening regional cooperation and
inter-regional coordination. He noted the need for regions
to apply the ecosystem approach, develop shared views on spatial
planning and management, and improve working methods, especially
in monitoring and assessment, and MPA development. Simcock
said OSPAR is working on ecological quality objectives and
reduction targets for hazardous substances, eutrophication,
radioactive substances, and offshore pollution. He added that
regional cooperation can improve integrated assessment, and
capacity building in marine science, information and management.
