Highlights for Tuesday 6 September 2011

International Conference on Green Economy and Sustainable Mountain Development: Opportunities and Challenges in View of Rio+20

On Tuesday morning, participants convened to hear Andreas Schild, Director General, ICIMOD, provide a broad context for the mountain agenda and to reflect on the first day of the workshop.

Participants then attended a session on “Key learning, experiences and messages from the Asia-Pacific mountain regions” and split in working groups on: identification of issues and challenges in promoting a green economy in mountain regions; identification of the potentials and opportunities for sustainable mountain development in the context of the green economy; how to create enabling conditions for promoting green economy for sustainable mountain development; and identification of principles and actions that demand priority in the global green economy and Rio+20.

In the afternoon, participants listened to reflections from the representatives of other mountain regions of the world and a summary of recommendations emerging from the workshop. In the evening, they attended the opening of the Conference. During the opening ceremony, the Right Honourable President of the Republic of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav, congratulated ICIMOD for organizing the workshop and urged for mountain issues to be included in the Rio+20 deliberations.

Morning plenary talks

Andreas Schild, ICIMOD, reflected on the first day of the workshop and presented additional perspectives on mountain systems.
Madhav Karki, ICIMOD, gave an overview of key learning, experiences and messages from the Asia-Pacific mountain regions.

Naseer Ahmad Gillani, Planning Commission, Pakistan, described his country’s priorities and the role the mountain regions in Pakistan play in the economy of the country.

Naba Bikram Singh Tripura, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affair, Bangladesh, described his country’s experiences with ensuring and furthering political representation for and recognition of mountain communities.

BMS Rathore, Ministry of Environment and Forests, India, encouraged moving beyond payments for ecosystem services, to consider many ways of valuing and incentivizing the protection of mountain systems.

 

 


Working groups

Sara Ahmad, IDRC, chaired a working group that strove to identify issues and challenges in promoting a green economy in mountain regions.
Eklabya Sharma (R), ICIMOD, chaired a working group that identified principles and actions that demand priority in the global green economy and Rio+20.
Promode Kant, Institute of Green Economy, chaired a working group that sought to identify the potential and opportunities for sustainable mountain development in the context of the green economy.
Priya Shyamsundar (R), South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics, led a working group that wrestled with the question of how to create enabling conditions for promoting green economy for sustainable mountain development.

Reginald Victor, Sultan Qaboos University, presented on the Middle East.

Miguel Saravia, Consorcio para el Desarrollo Sostenible de la Ecorregión Andina, presented on Latin America.

Chad Dear, University of Central Asia, presented on Central Asia.

Luca Listo, Evk2 CNR, spoke about collaborations between Europe and other continents.

Matthias Jurek presented on Europe.

 

 


Inauguration of the conference

Guests at the inauguration of the conference included (L-R): Madhav Karki, ICIMOD; Surendra Raj Kafle, Nepal Academy of Science and Technology; Robert Piper, UN; Ram Baran Yadav, President, Nepal; Andreas Schild, ICIMOD; Pema Gyamtsho, Ministry for Agriculture and Forests, Bhutan; and Golam Rasul, ICIMOD.
Ram Baran Yadav, President, Nepal, lit panas to inaugurate the conference, then presented a speech.
Noting that mountain people often remain on the geographic, economic, and social periphery, Robert Piper, UN, called the conference "important and timely."

Pema Gyamtsho, Ministry for Agriculture and Forests, Bhutan, encouraged participants to have "green minds, green hands and green hearts."
