MICs High-Level Conference
The second day of the High-Level Conference of Middle Income Countries (MICs) convened on 13 June 2013, in San José, Costa Rica. In the morning, delegates gathered for a ministerial breakfast roundtable entitled “A Development Strategy in Upper Middle Income Country: The Case of Costa Rica,” which addressed the role of social investment, economic inclusion strategies and renewable energy opportunities in development policy, and assessed the implications of implementing these policies.

Delegates then took part in a special dialogue on the challenges of MICs in sustainable development and the role of industry, in the morning and afternoon. The dialogue addressed, inter alia, the importance of sustainable industrial development in MICs to contribute to promoting social cohesion among others. They heard keynote speeches from Ludovico Alcorta, Director, Development Policy and Research, UNIDO and Mayi Antillón Guerrero, Costa Rican Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce. Delegates also heard panel discussions on fostering sustainable economic growth in MICs through value chains and on greening industry in the post-2015 development context.

In the afternoon, delegates heard a high-level panel on integrating MICs into the post-2015 development agenda, addressing the key concerns of MICs in the context of the preparatory process for the post-2015 development agenda. They also heard a high-level dialogue on sustainability and industrial development, which addressed strategic partnerships to advance the world’s sustainable development agenda.

In the evening, delegates attended a reception hosted by the Costa Rican Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce.
