ECOWAS-GFSE-GEF-UNIDO High Level Energy Forum
The high-level forum, hosted by the Government of Ghana and themed “Paving the Way for Sustainable Energy for All in West Africa through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” opened on 29 October 2012 in Accra, Ghana. Organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the Global Forum for Sustainable Energy (GFSE), and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the event saw hundreds of participants meet in two plenary sessions and six workshops on topics ranging from financing renewable energy in developing countries to energy efficient lighting and clean cookstoves.

Highlights for Tuesday, 30 October 2012

Participants reconvened on Tuesday, for the second sunny day of the ECOWAS-GFSE-GEF-UNIDO High Level Energy Forum Towards Sustainable Energy for All in West Africa. Delegates spent the day in plenary, engaging in high-level discussions on the GEF Strategic Programme for West Africa (SPWA) and moving ECOWAS renewable energy and energy efficiency policies to action.

Participants bustled between these discussions and side events on UNEP’s Rural Energy Enterprise Development programme, and best practices in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The day concluded with a ministerial session which saw the launch of five ECOWAS initiatives on energy efficiency.

Highlights for Wednesday, 31 October 2012

On Wednesday, the Forum's 323 participants reconvened in a morning ministerial session where resolutions on renewable energy and energy efficiency were discussed and adopted. The resolutions serve as the main outcomes of the meeting, focusing on the ECOWAS Policy on Renewable Energy; ECOWAS Policy on Energy Efficiency; the ECOWAS Small Hydro Power Program; and the ECOWAS Bioenergy Strategy Framework. The afternoon was composed of a high-level panel discussion on achieving the SE4ALL in West Africa.
