IISD Reporting Services - Stockholm Convention on POPs

On Wednesday morning, POPRC-12 participants convened in plenary to hear updates from the contact groups on PFOA and SCCPs. The Committee then considered the report on activities for effective participation in the work of the POPRC, as well as other matters, including the development of a draft road map to engage parties and other stakeholders in informed dialogue for enhanced science-based action in implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. Following these discussions, plenary was suspended until the afternoon to allow contact groups on PFOA and SCCPs to continue their work.

In the afternoon, participants reconvened in plenary to consider, inter alia, the draft risk profile on dicofol and unintentional releases of HCBD. The POPRC adopted the risk profile for dicofol and decided that it is likely, as a result of its long-range environmental transport, to lead to significant adverse human health and environmental effects such that global action is warranted.

A contact group on guidance on PFOS alternatives and a drafting group on SCCPs convened in the afternoon, and a contact group on decaBDE began its work in the evening.

IISD Reporting Services, through its ENB Meeting Coverage, has provided daily web updates from POPRC-12. In addition, IISD Reporting Services has produced a summary and analysis report from the meeting, which is available in HTML and PDF.
