Summary

On Thursday, 5 May 2016, in the morning, delegates to the first meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) considered draft recommendations on: review of progress in the implementation of the Convention, the financial mechanism, resource mobilization, review of progress towards Aichi target 16 on the Nagoya Protocol, and on the assessment and review of effectiveness of the Cartagena Protocol, including a discussion on whether the terminology “indigenous peoples and local communities” should be used under that Protocol.

In the afternoon, SBI 1 plenary considered draft recommendations on: biodiversity mainstreaming; administration of the Convention, including functional review of the Secretariat; and national reporting. Plenary reconvened in the evening to consider draft recommendations on: the SBI modus operandi; enhancing integration among the Convention and its Protocols, and the organization of meetings; capacity building; and use of the terminology “indigenous peoples and local communities.”

A Friends of the Chair group on synergies among biodiversity-related conventions met at lunchtime and in the evening. Another Friends of the Chair group on biodiversity mainstreaming met in the evening.
